10 things to avoid when freezing food!

published on 13 March, 2019 at 13:32
Freezing food seems easy enough, but actually, you need to be careful when freezing certain foods.

Freezing onion and garlic
1) Freezing garlic and onion changes their flavor.
2) When storing garlic in the fridge, wrap it in a paper towel before storing it.
3) Store onions in a cool, but not damp, place.

Freezing a loaf of bread
1) Freezing an entire loaf of bread means having to defrost it all before eating it.
2) It’s best to slice and separating the individual slices with parchment paper before freezing.

Filling containers to the top
Liquids expand when frozen.
2) Liquid volume increases by 10% when frozen.
3) This is why you should always leave a couple of centimeters at the top of the container when filling it with liquids.

Freezing ground meat
Freezing and whole package of ground meat is not the best idea.
2) It’s best to divide the meat into several smaller portions, so that you can defrost just the quantity you need.
3) Place the ground meat in freezer bags and let out all the air.
4) Divide the meat into sections.

Freezing a loaf of bread
1) Freezing an entire loaf of bread means having to defrost it all before eating it.
2) It’s best to slice and separating the individual slices with parchment paper before freezing.

Freezing food that’s still warm
1) You should not freeze food when it is still warm.
2) The sudden drop in temperature can alter the taste of food, but doing this also allows for frost to form and build up in the freezer.
3) Allow all foods to cool down completely before freezing.

Lack of organization
1) One of the main suggestions when freezing foods is to place them in the freezer in the right spots.
2) By not doing this you may be slowing down the freezing times and increasing energy consumption.
3) Placing things right in the middle of the freezer should be avoided.
4) Start filling the freezer up from the sides. This will speed up the cooling process.

Defrosting at room temperature
1) When food is brought back to room temperature the spoiling process, which was interrupted when frozen, starts again.
2) The best way to avoid the natural proliferation of bacteria is to defrost slowly.
3) In order to do this, first, place the food from the freezer to the refrigerator.

Freezing large quantities of sauce
By freezing it all together you will have to defrost it all at the same time.
Avoid that by pouring it into an ice tray and freezing.
When you are ready to use it, just pop out what you need.
Leaving air in freezer bags.
1) They are great to use, but just placing the food in them and freezing is not the right way to use them.
2) Leaving air in the bags can cause the food to dry out and also freezer burn.
3) Before freezing, make sure all the air has been removed from the bag and that the bag is in full contact with the food.

Freezing fruit without separating it
1) By freezing all the fruit together will cause the pieces to stick together.
2) To avoid this, place the fruit on a sheet of parchment paper and freeze it.
3) Once it's frozen, place it in a freezer bag and freeze.
4) This way the fruit won’t all stick together and it will be easier for you to use when you need it.
