Hard-Boiled Egg Sandwiches are a simple and effective appetizer, ideal for your lunches with friends, but also for a tasty aperitif or a buffet, or even for a spring picnic. Making them is very simple: just prepare the hard-boiled eggs, divide them in half and stuff them like a sandwich.

In our preparation we have created various fillings: made with salami, turkey breast, prosciutto, enriched with lettuce, tomato, avocado, mayonnaise, as well as a tantalizing deviled filling made with hard-boiled egg yolks mixed with mayonnaise, mustard, pickles, salt and pepper and a filling made of crispy bacon, lettuce and tomato.

The egg rolls will then be closed with a wooden toothpick and sprinkled with sesame seeds, ready to taste.

What is An Hard-Boiled Egg Sandwich

A hard-boiled egg sandwich is a unique twist on traditional sandwiches, where hard-boiled eggs form the foundation or "bread" of the sandwich. In this innovative approach, the eggs are not merely an ingredient among others but serve as the primary structure that holds the filling. After boiling and slicing the eggs in half, the yolks may be left intact or mashed with ingredients to create a filling. For different variations like salami, chicken ham, and prosciutto sandwiches, the egg halves are used to sandwich layers of meats, cheeses, vegetables, and sauces. Specifically, in the BLT version, the egg yolks are combined with mayonnaise, relish, and spices, then refilled into the egg whites, and topped with classic BLT components—bacon, lettuce (salad), and tomato. This method offers a low-carb, gluten-free alternative to typical bread sandwiches, emphasizing the eggs' role in both structure and flavor.

Can I Make An Hard-Boiled Egg Sandwich The Night Before?

Yes, you can prepare these hard-boiled egg sandwiches the night before. However, to ensure they stay fresh, it's best to assemble the sandwiches with ingredients like mayonnaise and cheese, and store any moist toppings like tomatoes separately to avoid sogginess. Assemble these components right before serving. Store everything in airtight containers in the refrigerator to maintain freshness and prevent flavors from mixing.

Tips and Variations

For easy peeling, use eggs that are a few days old rather than fresh from the store. Cook eggs in boiling water for about 9-12 minutes for a firm yolk. Cool them quickly in ice water to make peeling easier and to prevent a green ring from forming around the yolks.

– Use a sharp knife to ensure clean cuts of the hard-boiled eggs. To keep the slices even, you might consider using an egg slicer.

– When preparing fillings or mixtures for the sandwiches, such as the yolk mixture for the BLT, taste and adjust the seasonings according to your preference. Don’t forget a pinch of salt and pepper can dramatically enhance the flavors.

– To prevent the sandwiches from feeling dry, ensure there's enough mayonnaise or other creamy elements like avocado or spicy mayo in the filling.

– Replace the meats with grilled vegetables like zucchini, bell peppers, or mushrooms for a vegetarian-friendly version.

– Experiment with different types of cheese for added flavor. A sharp cheddar, creamy goat cheese, or smoked gouda can offer distinct tastes and textures.

– Incorporate finely chopped herbs such as chives, parsley, or dill into the yolk mixture for an aromatic touch.

– For those who enjoy a bit of heat, add chopped jalapeños to the filling, or use a spicy aioli instead of regular mayonnaise.

– Create a seafood version by adding flaked tuna or salmon, or even some anchovies for a bold taste.

– Enhance the toppings with options like sun-dried tomatoes, caramelized onions, or a sprinkle of capers for added texture and flavor.

– Drizzle a little of your favorite salad dressing over the sandwich for extra zing—ranch, thousand island, or balsamic glaze can be delightful.

How to Store Hard-Boiled Egg Sandwich

To maintain the best quality, place any uneaten sandwiches in an airtight container and refrigerate them for up to one day. It's not advisable to freeze these sandwiches, as the texture of the eggs and additional fresh ingredients like salad and tomatoes may degrade upon thawing, leading to a less appetizing texture and diminished flavor. For optimal taste, consume the sandwiches fresh or within a day of preparation.

How to Prepare Hard-Boiled Egg Sandwich

Start by slicing all the hard boiled eggs in half.

For the salami sandwich, stack cheese, tomato slices, lettuce, mayonnaise and salami on the two halves of the hard-boiled egg.

Close the sandwich with the other egg half and use a wooden toothpick to keep the sandwich in place.

For the turkey ham sandwich, stack spicy mayonnaise, salad, avocado and turkey ham on top of one half of the hard-boiled egg, then close the sandwich and use a wooden toothpick to keep it in place.

For the prosciutto sandwich, stack mayonnaise, salad, sliced tomato, prosciutto and avocado on an half of the hard-boiled egg before closing the sandwich and using a wooden toothpick to keep it in place.

For the BLT sandwich filling, mash the egg yolks, mayonnaise, pickle relish, spicy mustard and salt and pepper inside of a small bowl with a fork, then use the mixture to fill the hard-boiled egg whites.

Then, on top of the deviled filling, stack crispy bacon, salad and tomato, before closing the sandwich and using a wooden toothpick to keep it in place.

Transfer to a plate and sprinkle with sesame seeds before serving. Enjoy!
