A tea time treat with only three ingredients? Yes, it’s possible! These puff pastry croissants only need 3 ingredients: a roll of puff pastry, jam, and butter. It’s so easy to make too! Cut the pastry, fill it with jam, and bake. It’s a great option for teatime, or when you need something quick to make for unexpected guests! Because the ingredients are something you can always have on hand, you can have peace of mind knowing you will always have something to serve.

Who Invented Croissants?

As with many of the culinary delights we enjoy, we have the French to thank for croissants. It was created in 1915 by Sylvain Claudius Goy, who transformed a basic brioche recipe (created by August Zang) to include a laminated dough. To create a laminated dough, butter is folded into the dough, creating thin layers of flaky pastry. Fortunately, the work has been done for us, and you no longer need to go through all the effort. Keep a pack of store-bought puff pastry in your fridge, and you will always be ready to make something delicious.

Tips

  • The pastry should be completely thawed so it’s pliable enough to roll out but still cold. The best is to leave it to thaw overnight in the fridge instead of leaving it on the kitchen counter at room temperature.  If the pastry is too warm, it won’t puff enough. To make sure you get a nice puff, place the formed flowers in the fridge for half an hour.
  • You can use any fruit jam for this recipe: blueberry, strawberry, raspberry, or apricot jam will all work well.
  • If you want the top of the croissant to be glossy, you can use an egg wash instead of butter.
  • For added crunch, sprinkle sugar over the pastries before baking.

How To Store 3-Ingredient Croissants

The puff pastry croissants are best served on the day they’re made, while the pastry is still flaky. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat them in the oven or Airfryer.

Can You Freeze These Jam Croissants?

Yes, you can! Allow the croissants to cool completely. Then wrap with plastic wrap. Freeze in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator and reheat in the oven or Airfryer.

Can I Use Phyllo Dough Instead Of Puff Pastry?

Using phyllo dough with give you a more crackly texture, whereas a croissant is known for its flakiness. So it’s best to use puff pastry!

Can I Add Other Toppings to the 3-Ingredient Croissants?

Yes, use any of the following toppings:

  • Drizzle with a cream cheese glaze: mix 4 ounces of cream cheese, room temperature, 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar (or powdered sugar), sifted 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract, and 3 to 4 tablespoons milk
  • Toss with cinnamon sugar made from 1/4 cup granulated sugar and 1 tablespoon cinnamon.
  • Drizzle with chocolate sauce or caramel sauce (like dulce de leche)
