These hot dog skewers are just what you need for your next get-together. It’s an easy appetizer recipe perfect for parties or barbecues. To make it, you toast hot dog buns, grill the sausages, and top with lettuce and mayonnaise. As easy as that.

You get the same combination of taste and flavors that you’d get in your classic hotdog, but they’re small enough to grab and eat with one hand. You’ll need fresh hot dog buns and good-quality sausages (we recommend any German sausage). Serve with your favorite sauce and a cold beverage, and you have the perfect menu for a good time.

Can You Make Hot Dog Skewers Without Buns?

Yes, you can! Making hot dog skewers without buns is a great way to make them low-carb and keto-friendly. Grill mini sausages, and build skewers with folded lettuce, cubes of cheese, and cherry tomatoes. Drizzle with mayo before serving.

Tips

Go beyond the typical mustard and ketchup, and try one of these delicious flavorful toppings: Sweet relish, Fruit chutney, Chowchow (a tangy vegetable relish), Sweet chili sauce, Hoisin barbecue sauce.

As these hot dog skewers are served as an appetizer, every dish you serve with it should also be easy to eat. Think of things like potato chips, fruit skewers, grilled fruit, or even zucchini fries.

Add any combination of toppings according to your liking. Here are a few tasty ideas to get you started:

  • Tex Mex – top the hotdogs with mashed avocado (or guacamole), refried beans, pickled jalapeno, and queso fresco.
  • New York Style – top the hotdogs with caramelized onion, American mustard, and Cheddar cheese.
  • Buffalo Hot Dogs – top the hotdogs with crumbled blue cheese, mayonnaise, chopped celery, and buffalo hot sauce (we suggest using Frank’s hot sauce).

Can you make Hot Dog Skewers ahead of time?

If you want to make them ahead of time, start by grilling the hot dogs the day before (you can reheat them just before serving). Butter the hot dog rolls and store them in an airtight container at room temperature. Wash and dry the lettuce and store it in the fridge, in an airtight container. Pour the mayonnaise into a squeeze bottle to make it easier to drizzle over the hot dogs.

How To Store Hot Dog Skewers

Leftovers can be stored in the fridge (in an airtight container) for up to 3 days.

Notes

For the most delicious hot dogs, try any one of these well-known German sausages: frankfurter, wiener, and bratwurst. If you have specialty deli stores near you, you can also look out for bockwurst (made from ground pork and lightly smoked), knackwurst (garlicky ground veal and pork), or Weisswurst (uncured sausage, made with a mixture of veal and pork).
