Why Add Mashed Potato To Bread

We enjoy potatoes in all forms: mashed, roasted, fried—you name it! But there’s a good reason why you should also add mashed potato to bread dough.

Because of its ability to hold water, potato starches help to increase the moisture content in baked goods. It also prevents too much gluten formation, which means breads (and even pastries) are lighter and fluffier!

Cheese and Potato Bread Ingredients

  • Potato – choose a high-starch potato (like the Russet variety)
  • Milk – whole milk, slightly warmed (to activate the yeast)
  • Yeast – make sure the yeast you use is still active
  • Egg – the egg adds richness to the dough
  • Parsley – use fresh herbs for the best flavor
  • Cheese – for more flavor, use mature cheddar cheese

Tips

For added crunch, brush the rolls with beaten egg and sprinkle some sesame seeds, freshly ground salt, or everything bagel seasoning.

Make sure the milk is warm to the touch. If it’s too cold, the yeast won’t be effective. If it’s too hot, you will kill the yeast.

If you want to add something extra, you can add crispy bacon, chopped ham, olives, jalapenos, or sun-dried tomatoes to the filling. Be careful not to overfill, otherwise, the filling will spill out during baking.

How to Store Cheese and Potato Bread

This Cheese and Potato Bread will keep best when kept at room temperature (for up to 2 days). If you refrigerate it, it will dry out more quickly.

Can You Freeze Cheese and Potato Bread

If you want to store it for longer, you can wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and keep it in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature.

Can I Make Cheese and Potato Bread in the Airfryer?
