Magic Pepper and Soap Science Experiment for Kids
published on 19 August, 2024 at 21:00
The world of cooking is rich in science. With this super fun experiment to do with kids, you can also learn something incredible!
All you need to do is fill a plate with water and add some black pepper. After covering the entire surface, dip a finger in dish soap and touch the water. You will see the pepper immediately move away.
But why does it happen?
Water molecules attract each other, creating a thin layer known as surface tension, which is why the pepper does not dissolve. This is because it is very light and hydrophobic, meaning it repels water and floats.
Soap, on the other hand, has surfactant properties, which means it can lower this surface tension by breaking the attraction between water molecules. This is why the pepper moves to the edges of the plate, where the surface tension is still present.
