What Is A One-Sheet Dish?

One-sheet meals, also known as one-pan meals are the epitome of convenience and practicality. Even though it’s popular in today’s busy life, the idea behind cooking a whole meal in one vessel dates back to ancient times. Across cultures, people have combined their proteins, vegetables, and starches all into a single pot or pan. This was very efficient, especially since most people only had one source of heat and not multiple stove hobs like we have today. One-pot recipes peaked during the 1950s as more people started working long hours outside the home, and needed something quick and easy to make—with less washing up! Today the trend continues, with recipes varying from fish to beef!

Tips

  • The rosemary can be substituted with dill, chives, tarragon, or thyme—these will all go well with salmon.
  • To check if the salmon is cooked properly, use a thermometer. The measured temperature for cooked salmon is 145°F. To ensure even cooking, use salmon fillets that are all the same size.
  • Use the freshest salmon fillets you can find. Salmon should always be a good color, with a firm texture, and a fresh scent (not overly fishy!).
  • The recipe can also be made with frozen salmon fillets, but it will require a few extra steps. First, thaw the salmon overnight in the fridge, and only use it if it’s completely thawed. Pat dry with paper towels before using.

How To Store Salmon and Baked Potato

Store the leftovers in a fridge, in an airtight container, for up to 3 days.

How To Know When the Salmon is Cooked

To check if the salmon is cooked properly, use a thermometer.  Medium rare salmon is usually cooked to an internal temperature of about 120ºF. However, the USDA recommends cooking it to an internal temperature of 145ºF, to ensure it’s safe for eating.

What Is The Best Potatoes to Use?

Look for Yukon gold or baby red potatoes, both are waxy enough to keep their shape nicely.

Can I Use Sweet Potatoes?

Yes! Sweet potatoes will not only go well with the salmon, but it’s also healthy. The sweet potatoes don’t need to be peeled and can be sliced the same size.

What Baking Dish To Use?

This dish works well with a baking sheet. The hot air can easily circulate around the salmon and potatoes, ensuring even cooking.

Is It Better to Cook Salmon Covered or Uncovered?

Cooking salmon can be done either covered or uncovered. Cooking it uncovered, like by grilling or roasting, creates a crisp exterior while keeping the inside moist. Covering salmon, such as in foil or with a lid, steams the fish, ensuring it stays tender and moist, and is great for infusing flavors. The best method depends on your preference for texture and taste.
