Why do we eat cake and blow out candles on our birthday?
This tasty tradition has ancient origins!
In ancient Egypt since sugar did not exist yet, they would make bread sweetened with honey. It was used to pay homage to the pharaoh and the deceased.
This first cake ancestor was in fact found in the sarcophagus, it is thought for celebratory purposes.
But the cake in the form we know today comes from the Greeks who used to prepare a round cake to idolize Artemis, goddess of the moon.
In fact, this dessert was reminiscent of the moon and was decorated with candles to represent its light.
By blowing on it and making a wish, it was thought that the smoke released would reach the gods in the sky.
Since then, the custom has spread throughout the world,
but it was in Medieval Germany that they began using it precisely on the occasion of birthdays.
On this special day, a cake was prepared and the candles had to stay lit all day to ward off spirits, then blowing them out in the evening and making a wish.
