They are not only tasty to eat but make a thoughtful gift. Want to brighten someone’s day? Make them a batch of these colorful sunflower cookies. They will love it!

Tips

If you don’t want a cocoa center, you can keep the flower cookies whole, and decorate them with black royal icing too.

If you don’t have a circle cookie cutter, you can use the small cap from a bottle.

If you want leaves with more texture, add yellow food gel coloring to buttercream frosting and decorate the cookies with a piping nozzle.

If you want, you can create smooth yellow petals with a glaze icing. Whip up a quick and easy glaze icing by whisking together 2 cups of confectioners’ sugar, 2 tbsp butter, 1 tsp vanilla extract, and up to 4 tsp milk. Add a few drops of bright yellow icing.

To create more texture in the center of the sunflower cookie, use chocolate sprinkles.

If you want the center to be darker, use Dutch-processed cocoa powder, which will be darker.

You can also add green leaves to the sunflower cookies. Use green buttercream and a leaf piping nozzle.

You can even make flavored icing:

  • For orange icing: Replace the vanilla and milk with orange juice and add 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of finely grated orange zest.
  • For a lemon flavor: Replace the milk and vanilla with freshly squeezed lemon juice and 1/2 teaspoon of finely grated lemon zest.

Store the sunflower cookies in an airtight container (at room temperature) for up to 14 days.

The sunflower cookies can also be frozen. Allow the cookies to cool completely, then place them in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Freeze for 2-3 hours, then transfer to a Ziploc bag. The cookies can be frozen for up to 4 months.
