We all know wine isn’t just good for drinking. For many years wine has been a firm favorite in food, especially in French and Italian cuisine. In this recipe, instead of adding it to food, we use it to make our own red wine sea salt. Perfect for sprinkling on salads, using as a dry rub, or on sandwiches.

The red wine salt is also useful for macerating vegetables or tenderizing meat. It also looks beautiful on the table, with its pretty pink color. You’ll need red wine, salt, and a strainer. You might think it’s a complicated process, but it’s actually very easy to make. Soak the salt in red wine, drain, and bake. Easy as that.

Once you make this red wine seal salt recipe, feel free to experiment with more flavors. The red wine sea salt makes a wonderful homemade gift for friends and family.

How To Use Red Wine Sea Salt

You can use red wine sea salt, in the same way, you would use another flavored salt like smoked sea salt.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Use it as a rub on meat or fish
  • Sprinkle it on fresh tomatoes
  • Add to pasta dishes or salads
  • Sprinkle over open sandwiches.

Red Wine Salt Ingredients

Wine – use any red wine.

Salt – for this recipe, you’ll need a combination of fine and coarse sea salt.

How To Make Red Wine Sea Salt

Start by mixing the two types of salt together. Carefully add the wine, then mix it with salt, making sure that the salt is completely covered with wine. Allow the wine to infuse into the salt for at least 1 hour.

In the meanwhile prepare the sieve by lining it with a clean kitchen cloth and placing it over a large bowl. When the wine and salt have been infused for an hour, you can drain the mixture. Pour the wine-salt mixture into the cloth-lined sieve. Use your hands to squeeze out the extra moisture from the salt.

Now it’s time to bake the salt. Spread the salt on a baking sheet and bake at a low temperature for an hour and a half.

Tips

Much like flavored sugar, you can also add more seasoning to your jar of salt. Feel free to add dried herbs such as rosemary, bay leaves, oregano, or thyme. You can also add in citrus peels like orange or lemon, or even whole spices like coriander and star anise.

Feel free to experiment with different types of red wine, or even try white wine.

If you live in a hot and dry area, you can also sun dry the sea salt for about 2 to 4 hours instead of using the oven.

Use sterilized jars.
