Many would think that it’s impossible to improve on a cup of hot chocolate. Well, we’re here to tell you otherwise. Thanks to TikTok, we’ve discovered Hot Chocolate Bombs—chocolate balls filled with marshmallows and hot chocolate powder.

To serve, the balls are placed in a large cup and hot milk is poured over it. This causes the balls to melt, releasing the delicious hot chocolate ingredients.

It is an easy, impressive, and super fun dessert recipe that originally became popular through social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok. The hot chocolate is not only pretty to look at, but it has the same rich chocolatey flavor you’d expect from a high-quality cup of hot cocoa.

What Are Hot Chocolate Bombs?

Hot Chocolate Bombs are filled with marshmallows and hot chocolate powder and closed to form a sphere. To serve, the balls are placed in a large cup, and hot milk is poured over it. This causes the balls to melt, releasing the delicious hot chocolate ingredients. It’s definitely an impressive beverage.

Hot Chocolate Bomb Ingredients

Chocolate – use couverture chocolate or any high-quality bar chocolate (don’t use chocolate from the candy aisle).

Hot chocolate powder – use store-bought cocoa powder, or make your own.

Marshmallows – make sure to use mini marshmallows, as they will melt more easily.

How To Make Hot Chocolate Bombs

Making the hot chocolate bombs is easier than you may think.

Melting Chocolate

Start by melting the chocolate using a double boiler or the microwave. To set up a double boiler, use a medium-sized pot and a heatproof bowl (glass). Make sure that the bowl and pot fit nicely onto each other—the bowl should be resting on top of the pot.

Place water inside the pot (it should not touch the bowl) and place over medium heat. If using the microwave, melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl, in short, 30-second increments until melted.

Molding Chocolate Spheres

Spoon the melted chocolate inside the mold and swirl to make sure the whole mold is covered. It should spread evenly to prevent some areas from being thicker than others. Allow hardening for 2 hours (you can do this by placing them in the freezer).

Assembling Hot Chocolate Bombs

Carefully remove the chocolate shapes from the mold. Place the halves on a frying pan to flatten the edges. Add the cocoa powder and marshmallows to the chocolate halves, and close the two molds. Drizzle with melted chocolate and sprinkles.

Should I Temper Chocolate?

There’s no need to temper the chocolate. But if you want super shiny balls, then you’ll definitely need to temper the chocolate.

How To Serve Hot Chocolate Bombs

Serve the chocolate bombs with a cup of hot milk. You can also use non-dairy milk like almond milk, oat milk, or soy milk.

Tips

You can make your own hot chocolate powder for this recipe. Simply blend together 2/3 cup granulated sugar, 1/3 cup cocoa powder, and a pinch of salt.

These are perfect for special occasions. For Christmas, use white chocolate and sprinkle with crushed peppermint candies. For Valentine’s Day, use dark chocolate and red heart sprinkles.

To make the Hot Chocolate bombs as gifts, serve them in cupcake liners.

How To Store Hot Chocolate Bombs

Store the hot chocolate bombs in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
