Tips

This recipe works great when made with Challah bread or brioche.

You can easily add variations by simply switching up the chocolate bar. If you like dark chocolate, use a bar of dark chocolate. Or use chocolate bars with mint, caramel, nuts, or fruits. White chocolate will also do. If you really want to take this Chocolate French Toast to the next level, use a coffee-flavored chocolate!

You can give the Chocolate French Toast a s’more twist, by adding marshmallow fluff to the bread pocket.

If you don’t have chocolate bars on hand, you can use a chocolate spread like Nutella. Simply slice the thicker slices in half, and spread with Nutella (or any other chocolate spread). Place the two slices together and proceed with the recipe.

Soak the bread long enough to cover completely with the egg wash, but not so long that the bread becomes mushy.

It’s important to cook over a medium heat, and not over a high heat. This will make sure that the edges become crispy, without burning.

To prepare the Chocolate French Toast in advance, you can whisk the liqueur-egg mixture and store it in the refrigerator. You can also slice the bread, make the pockets, and stuff it with chocolate bars. Store the stuffed slices in an airtight container at room temperature. Soak and cook just before serving.

Chocolate French Toast is best served immediately after cooking!

Other topping ideas include whipped cream, fresh berries, maple syrup, chocolate chips, nuts, and honey.
