These colorful cakes are part of the Japanese culinary tradition; Mochi are desserts made of glutinous rice, a variety of Asian rice with a fine grain and an elongated shape that becomes very sticky when cooked. In Japan, these desserts are consumed by families especially during the New Year celebrations. A detail, however, makes them potential killers: their rubbery consistency, which every year is the cause of many suffocation cases especially among the elderly and children.
